GLOSSARY OF SHIPPING AND OTHER TERMS

AIR FREIGHT – Shipment of cargo by airplane.  

AIRWAYBILL - The forwarding agreement or carrying agreement between shipper and air carrier. It is issued only in non-negotiable form.

BILL OF LADING INSTRUCTION – Document of format sent by the export freight forwarder to the ocean freight carrier containing information on how to create the master bill of lading.

BOOKING - Arrangements with a carrier for the acceptance and carriage of freight; i.e., a space reservation.

CARGO – Material that is being shipped.

 

CARRIER - Any person or entity who, in a contract of carriage, undertakes to perform or to procure the performance of carriage by rail, road, sea, air, inland waterway or by a combination of such modes.

CERTIFICATE OF ORIGIN - A certified document showing the origin of goods. It is used in international commerce.

CHARGEABLE WEIGHT – Volume weight used by airlines measured in pounds or kilograms.

 

CLIENT – Party contracting the export freight forwarder to arrange for the shipment of cargo.

COMMERCIAL INVOICE - Represents a complete record of the transaction between exporter and importer with regard to the goods sold. Also reports the content of the shipment and serves as the basis for all other documents about the shipment.

CONSIGNEE - A person or company to whom commodities are shipped.

CONSOLIDATION - Cargo containing shipments of two or more shippers or suppliers. Container load shipments may be consolidated for one or more consignees.

CUBE – Volume measurement of the shipment.

 

CUSTOMS DUTIES – Funds paid to the customs service of the importing country for importation of goods.  Duty rates are based on the classification of the cargo. 

 

DANGEROUS GOODS DECLARATION - Document which shows the type and amount of hazardous goods contained within a particular shipment.

 

DELIVERY RECEIPT – Document signed by the consignee which confirms delivery of cargo and notes any exceptions to the shipment.

 

DESTINATION – Point to which the cargo is being shipped.

 

DESTINATION AGENT – Party at destination that is arranging for the customs clearance and delivery of cargo. It is also known as Import Forwarder.

 

DIMENSIONS – Measurements of each of the pieces within a particular shipment.

 

DOCUMENTATION – Any paperwork that is used in the shipping process, usually commercial invoice, packing list, or certificate of origin.

 

DUTY RATE – The rate of customs duties levied against a particular product.

 

EXPORT FORWARDER – Freight forwarder assigned by the client to arrange for the export of cargo.

 

EXPORT FORWARDER SYSTEM – The forwarding system currently used by the export forwarder (Also known as the legacy system).

EXPORT LICENSE - A government document which permits the "Licensee" to engage in the export of designated goods to certain destinations.

HAZARDOUS CARGO – Cargo determined to be dangerous for transport.

 

HOUSE AIRWAYBILL (HAWB) – Air way bill issued by a freight forwarder or consolidator covering a single shipment containing the names, addresses and specific description of the goods shipped.

 

HOUSE BILL OF LADING (HBL) – Bill of lading issued by a freight forwarder or consolidator covering a single shipment containing the names, addresses and specific description of the goods shipped.

 

IMPORT FORWARDER - Party at destination that is arranging for the customs clearance and delivery of cargo (Same as Destination Agent).

 

MANUFACTURER – Producer of goods.

 

MEASURE – The volume of goods in a shipment, measured in cubic feet or cubic meters.

 

NOTIFY PARTY – Party that the carrier is to contact upon arrival of goods at destination.

 

OCEAN FREIGHT – Shipment of goods by vessel over the ocean.

 

ORIGIN – Point from which shipment originates.

PACKING LIST - Itemized list of commodities with marks/numbers but no cost values indicated.

PARTIAL PURCHASE ORDER – A purchase order that has been split in terms of pieces.

 

PARTIES – The people or companies that are listed in documentation and bills of lading who are responsible for the shipment.

 

PURCHASE ORDER - Document issued by buyer to seller showing what items are being purchased, at what price, and what the terms of delivery are.

 

PURCHASE ORDER MODULE – the section in Tracking Pro that manages new and unassigned purchase orders.

 

RAIL FREIGHT – Shipment of cargo by railroad.

 

RAILWAYBILL - A document that establishes the terms of a contract between a shipper and a railroad. It serves as a document of title, a contract of carriage and a receipt for goods.

 

STRAIGHT BILL OF LADING - A non-negotiable bill of lading which states a specific identity to whom the goods should be delivered.

SHIPMENT - The tender of one lot of cargo at one time from one shipper to one consignee on one bill of lading.

SHIPPER - The person or company who is usually the supplier or owner of commodities shipped.

SHIPPERS EXPORT DECLARATION - A joint Bureau of the Census International Trade Administration form used for compiling U.S. exports. It is completed by a shipper and shows the value, weight, destination, etc., of export shipments as well as Schedule B commodity code.

SUPPLIER – Party that is providing goods for shipment; can sometimes be the manufacturer.

 

SYSTEM – The export freight forwarding system currently being designed.

 

TEMPLATE – a method to retain similar booking or shipment data for use as a baseline file later. This saves re-keying time.

 

TRANSSHIPMENT POINT - Place where cargo is transferred to another carrier or from one vessel to another.

 

TRUCK FREIGHT – Movement of cargo by truck.

UNASSIGNED PO – a purchase order not yet associated with a shipment.

WAREHOUSE - A place for the receipt, delivery, consolidation, distribution, and storage of goods/cargo.

WEIGHT – The weight of cargo in a specific shipment, measured in pounds or kilograms.
